Ensure your Mobile App is on Your Digital Inventory List

Mobile advertising feels vague in a lot of station sales meetings because nobody can point to the same inventory list they use for traditional radio. A salesperson tells an advertiser, “We can run something in the app,” and the questions immediately begin. Where does it appear? How long does it run? What happens when someone taps it? Does it lead to the advertiser’s website, a coupon, an event page, or somewhere else? If your team answers those questions differently depending on who happens to be in the room, the problem isn’t your mobile app. The problem is that your inventory hasn’t been documented.

I’ve talked about the importance of creating a Digital Inventory List for years. Every radio station already has an inventory sheet for commercial logs that documents stopsets, sponsorships, and available inventory. Your digital products deserve the same treatment. A Digital Inventory List is simply a master document that shows everyone on staff every advertising opportunity your station offers online, from website banner ads and newsletters to podcast sponsorships, stream pre-rolls, social media campaigns, and your mobile app.

I learned this lesson while helping a station organize its mobile advertising packages. Management understood what the app could do, and the sales staff knew what advertisers were asking for, but there wasn’t a single document connecting the two. Once we added the app to the station’s Digital Inventory List, pricing became easier, sales conversations became more consistent, and advertisers stopped asking questions that nobody on staff could confidently answer.

Be Exhaustive the First Time

When you build your Digital Inventory List, don’t stop after listing the obvious opportunities. This is one of those projects where it’s worth taking an extra hour and documenting everything you can think of, even if you don’t plan on selling every placement immediately. The goal isn’t to create a rate card. The goal is to build a master inventory of every digital asset your station owns.

Open your app and walk through it as if you’re a listener. Visit every screen. Could someone sponsor the home page? The podcast section? Local events? News? Weather? Contests? Push notifications? Every feature deserves at least a conversation. Some ideas may never make it into a sales package, while others could become some of your most valuable advertising opportunities simply because an advertiser sees a fit your staff hadn’t considered.

Don’t forget that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are typically extensions of your mobile app experience. While Apple and Google tightly control those interfaces, there may still be sponsorship opportunities tied to your streaming provider, audio playback, or pre-roll messaging. On some platforms (like ours), you can display sponsor messages and images during stop sets or while their commercials play. All of those deserve a place on your inventory list as well. The important thing is knowing the opportunities exist before an advertiser asks about them.

Sell the Destination, Not the Placement

One mistake I see stations make is selling the placement instead of the outcome. Advertisers rarely care that their message appears on the app’s home screen. They care about what happens after someone taps it. A car dealership wants listeners landing on current inventory or service specials. A restaurant wants them viewing today’s menu or downloading a coupon. An event sponsor wants people arriving at the event page with directions, times, and ticket information.

That’s why every item on your Digital Inventory List should include more than just the placement. It should describe where the promotion appears, how long it runs, what triggers it, where the listener goes next, and what action you’re trying to encourage. When your salespeople can explain all of that in a single sentence, advertisers immediately have a much clearer picture of what they’re buying.

A Living Document

One of the biggest misconceptions about a Digital Inventory List is that it’s nothing more than a pricing sheet. I don’t look at it that way at all. To me, it’s a living document that grows alongside your station. Every time you launch a new website feature, add another podcast, introduce a newsletter, redesign your app, or roll out a new promotion, you should ask yourself one simple question: “Can this be monetized?” If the answer is yes, it belongs on the list.

That approach also removes a tremendous amount of internal confusion. Salespeople aren’t inventing products while they’re sitting in front of a client. They’re choosing from products that have already been created, documented, and priced. Management knows what’s available, the digital team knows what’s required to fulfill it, and advertisers gain confidence because everyone is describing the same package the same way.

Final Thoughts

Your mobile app shouldn’t be treated as a separate product that only one person on staff understands. It’s simply another section of your Digital Inventory List. Once you begin looking at it that way, you’ll probably discover more advertising opportunities than you realized were there.

So here’s a simple exercise. Open your app, tap every screen, and write down every sponsorship opportunity you can find. Some of those ideas may never be sold, but others could become the next package your sales team confidently presents to a client. Either way, your Digital Inventory List will be stronger, your staff will be on the same page, and your advertisers will benefit from a much more organized digital strategy.
