Before Worrying About AI Search, Fix Your Radio Station Website

As more people use tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Google’s AI-powered search, and other tools to find information, radio stations have another reason to pay attention to how easily they can be discovered online. A recent Radio World article raises this issue for broadcasters, but I think there’s a more immediate concern. Many radio station websites still struggle to provide the basic information these systems need to understand and recommend them.

Start with the obvious. Does your website clearly identify your station’s name, call letters, frequency, format, and the communities you serve? Is that information consistent throughout the site? If your station serves several nearby towns, those communities should be mentioned naturally in your content. Don’t assume search engines or AI systems will figure out your coverage area from your transmitter location or mailing address.

Personality and program pages are another missed opportunity. Every show should have a current schedule, information about its hosts, and useful content associated with the program. Interviews, podcasts, contests, and polls give listeners reasons to visit beyond simply looking up who’s on the air. Social media can promote those activities, but your website should be their permanent home. A social post quickly disappears down the feed, while a properly maintained page can continue attracting visitors.

Local content may be your station’s biggest advantage. Community events, school information, local businesses, weather resources, and original news coverage all help establish your station as a source of information about its market. Include specific names, locations, dates, and relevant links. The more useful and accurate your local information becomes, the more opportunities there are for traditional search engines and AI systems to discover and reference it.

There are technical considerations, too. Descriptive page titles, logical navigation, structured data, working links, and readable text all help automated systems understand your website. Keep important information out of graphics and social media posts that provide little context. None of these improvements guarantees an appearance in an AI-generated answer, but they make your website more useful and accessible to everyone.

At Skyrocket Radio, we’ve always encouraged stations to treat their websites as an extension of their programming rather than an online brochure. That means keeping information current, publishing useful local content, and giving listeners reasons to return throughout the day. AI search adds another reason to do those things, but it doesn’t change the fundamentals.

Before spending money on an AI search strategy, make sure your website is doing the basics well. If search engines, AI assistants, and listeners can’t quickly figure out who you are, where you are, and what you offer, that’s the problem to fix first.
